Pretty views, crappy field

A solid break in the rain is forecast for the next week. Today's match was played in bright sunshine at Fishermans Park in James Bay. A beautiful picturesque location, but the field leaves a lot to be desired. Very bumpy, sloping and not a true sized field.

With Ryan L and RJ out of this one, Gorge FC started with 2 on the bench. With only 4 teams in the U16 Gold division, this marks game # 6 against Bays United.

The match started with Gorge FC immediately applying heavy pressure on the Bays goal. Within two minutes, there were two corners and about 5 headers on goal.
On 6 minutes, Clayton moved the ball up the midfield and fed a nice pass to Russ streaking down the left. Russ beat his man and crossed into the box for Tom to start the scoring.
Score 1-0.

With very little opportunity for Bays to break down the Gorge defense, the majority of the play was in the Bays end. Mohin had a header in the box that just failed to score. Jordy had a number of long range shots (and a Yellow card).

Although Gorge FC was controlling the play, the soft approach to attacking the ball led to periods of erratic play. On defence, Big Ryan was solid, and Steve, Evan and Kevin shut down the runs. The first half ended with Gorge up by the single goal.

The second half opened with Bays giving a renewed effort that on 41 minutes was rewarded when Mateusz could only palm up a long high shot that looped over his head into the net.
Score 1-1.

Play went back and forth without any quality chances until the 19 minute mark. Quinn had been substituted in and an aggressive run by Evan up the right produced Gorge's second goal. Evan spotted Quinn and fed a great pass up. Quinn controlled, set up and launched another rocket from his favourite spot about 20 yards out on the right in line with the net. The keeper had no chance as the ball was high and inside the right post.
Score 2-1.

The goal energized Gorge FC and the boys continued the onslaught. On 64 minutes, Tom led a good run into the box and was brought down leading to the ref pointing to the penalty spot.
Clayton was called upon to take the penalty and coolly placed the ball low into the right side of the net.
Score 3-1.

The rest of the half saw sustained pressure by Gorge with the occasional foray on goal by Bays. Matuesz was rarely challenged and when called upon did well to control the ball on a poor field.
Good runs by Russ led to nice crosses and subsequent corners. The midfield was solid with TJ and David marking well. All in all an effort that although soft at times was more than enough for the win. Playing the same teams week after week lends itself to the occasional lack of motivation.

There won't be any lack of motivation next week as the B Cup Quarter finals sees Gorge FC travel over the Malahat for a game against Cowichan. Bays has a bye into the semi's and Gordon Head meets Peninsula in the other semi.
