Gorge FC 3 - 1 Gordon Head



A cool and windy night greeted the teams under the lights at Hampton Park. The turf field only closes when snow is on the field, and the mild temperatures ensured that that would not be an issue tonight.

Thanks to the Gordon Head coach to rally his team to play this make up game. With only four teams in the Gold Division and the amount of rained out and snowed out days, we have a lot of makeup games against each team.

The outcome of the match would see Gorge FC up by a single point with a loss or up by 7 points with the victory. Going into the Christmas break with a healthy lead was the only thing on the boys minds. Missing Jordy (suspension) and Kevin took two solid starters out of the lineup.

Gordon Head's style of play has improved from last year to this year. They pass much better and defend well. The games between the two clubs are always close and very entertaining. Tonight was no different.

Aside from the odd foray into the Gorge FC end, the play was primarily in the Gordon Head defensive third for long stretches of the first half. The scoring was opened by one of many corners Gorge FC earned. Russell was placing the ball well and on 33 minutes, he delivered another corner into the box. The ball was headed a number of times until it finally deflected off of Tom with Evan at the goals edge to deliver the final blow.
Score 1-0.

A scant two minutes later Gordon Head strung together a number of nice passes for a sharp angle shot on Mateusz that eluded his dive and hit off the far post and out. The teams went into the break with Gorge FC up 1-0.

The second half saw a re energized Gordon Head team. It made for entertaining football as the play raced from end to end.
On 50 minutes, Gordon Head striker Kevin Sheen was able to control the ball and was allowed time and space to turn and shoot through a maze of players out of the keepers reach.
Score 1-1.

Undaunted, Gorge FC continued to pressure the Gordon Head defence and at the 64 minute mark, a ball was played high in the air up the right lane just over half. Big Ryan was able to head the ball into Clayton's path as he raced down the side. Clayton delivered a nice lateral pass to Quinn a few yards outside the box. Quinn controlled and delivered a thunderous shot into the short side that the keeper had no chance to stop.
Score 2-1.

At the 72 minute mark, Gorge FC kept up their attacking play with Clayton and Quinn handling a throw in deep down the right side. Quinn sent a lovely cross clear across the top of the box where RJ went up for the header. He was able to send the ball back to Russell who expertly brought the ball down and volleyed an unstoppable drive from 22 yards out into the far side of the net.
Score 3-1.

The last 8 minutes saw end to end play with no more scoring. Final score 3-1.

* Notes: Mateusz made a great point blank save. Ryan E was handed a yellow card. Steven was rock solid communicating well and clearing the ball. With Russell and Quinn on the sidelines for a while injured, the trio of Mohin, RJ and TJ more than held their own against the larger Gordon Head marks and contributed well to the offense. David had a number of dangerous runs. Ryan L was his usual lethal self controlling the midfield. Ryan E and Tom played strong against their most dangerous strikers and attacking midfielders. Russell and Quinn supplied their striker instincts. Evan contributed on both ends of the pitch and scored his first goal of the campaign. Clayton was controlling his side of the field in offense and defense.
