Lady Manners School had dismantled the U17 Gorge Silver team on Sunday by a score of 10-0.
Needing a dose of stiffer competition, the U16 Gorge FC team was called upon on short notice to play this International Friendly.

Any time a team is afforded the opportunity to play a match against a quality side, it is looked upon as a test of not only how well you measure up, but of your character.

The boys were excited for this game only two days after the 1 - nil defeat in the Coastal Cup Final. They commented on the cool accents and how the English boys spoke to each other.

The scouting report said that the Lady Manners team played effective two-touch football and communicated well on the pitch. Also, that their keeper was the main voice on the field who directs their play.

The nerves quickly calmed as the match got underway. Gorge FC went on the offensive immediately and Jordy tested the defense early with some great runs. Gorge did not allow the visitors to put any type of a flow together as the whole team fought for every ball and closed down the open space effectively.
Gorge FC opened the scoring on 20 minutes with Quinn finding Jordy beating the offside trap, Jordy ran onto the ball and after spotting the keeper well out of his net, chipped a long shot over the keeper to land squarely into the back of the net. This goal cemented in the minds of the boys that they can not only compete with the British boys, but can win.
To a man the Gorge FC team stepped up and did their job shutting down the offensive forays, controlling the midfield and using the width of the pitch effectively to supply crosses into the box with our strikers looking dangerous.
After the first half the score was Gorge FC 1 - 0 Lady Manners School.

The second half was very similar to the first except a few of the boys took some knocks. RJ, Russell and Ryan L all needed some type of medical attention. As the game was drawing to a close, Lady Manners School pushed forward in numbers and the chances were being created.

Just on full time a free kick was awarded tight to the touch line on the right in line with the top of the box. The resulting kick was headed in on the near side by the Lady Manners keeper with only seconds remaining. The game ended in a draw 1 - 1.

Both teams congratulated each other for a well played match and Gorge FC presented the visiting players with 50th Anniversary jerseys and Lady Manners players presenting school pins for the Gorge team. True sportsmanship was shown before, during and after the match.
